Sit back and relax while I read aloud from The Maine Woods by Henry David Thoreau. There's no end to the story in today's episode, just the play by play narrative from Thoreau's journey. This reading is from part 2, entitled Chesuncook.
Get comfortable and allow yourself to drift off to sleep.

Today's reading is from American author Walter Van Tilburg Clark. I'm reading slowly and quietly so you can drift off to sleep as you listen to The Portable Phonograph.

Today we have a Guided Meditation: Metta, also known as Loving Kindness Meditation.
Loving kindness meditation can increase feelings of happiness and connection with others. When done regularly, this practice helps lower symptoms of anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. This is one version of this type of meditation.
Today's meditation will help you relax and let go of stress. However, this meditation is not meant to drift off to sleep so try to stay awake until the end.

Are you familiar with the work of Walt Whitman? Born on Long Island in 1819, his formal education was over by the age of eleven. He became a printer's apprentice, then a journeyman printer, free-lance writer, and editor. He published his first edition of Leaves of Grass at his own expense in 1855. For the rest of his life, he continued to add, revise and release new editions of the book. It was a treat for me to read one of his poems for you.
Please enjoy A Song of the Rolling Earth by Walt Whitman.

This week I'm reading a short story by Louisa May Alcott called My May-Day Among Curious Birds and Beasts. Although she is best known for Little Women, the author has a lot of charming short stories.

This story is from A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales for Boys and Girls (1853) by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It's a children's book in which he retells Greek myths. Do you recognize this one?
